Reading in PTE requires a lot of practice along with learning from it. Although reading means just reading a text of 200-300 words and answering some questions based on the same, but PTE has got the different requirements. It has been drafted is such a way that a candidate needs to work thoroughly on four main components. These are:
- Presence of mind
- Comprehension skills
Presence of mind
Presence of mind means that one while attempting a PTE reading question should concentrate completely on the text given word by word because sometimes a reading and writing blank (also known as collocations or dropdowns) contains a hint or clue in the sentence or phrase that we tend to miss out while finding the answer to save time. Also, your focus on the question instead of other thoughts help you attain better scores in reading.
Grammar being the imperative component needs to be worked on carefully because it is covering 40% of the questions. A good coaching PTE institute will incorporate all the basics of grammar while teaching how to crack reading blanks. So, the basics include further several elements, and these are:
- Parts of speech- noun, verb, adjective, and adverb
- Tenses- simple present and perfect tenses more often
- Prepositions- use of to, for, and
- Subjective clues
- Modal verbs and Passive voice
- Article rules
One needs to know which part of the speech is missing from the sentence that must be chosen from the list. Sometimes a blank is simply checking the level of your grammar where it tests you on your knowledge of articles like “The concept of obligation may include an ___________. (Here a word with vowel sounds will be the correct answer)”. Moving further on.
Pte test may evaluate you on some words that are not of daily use. Hence, one needs to study and practice reading blanks on daily basis till the real PTE test in order to build a great list of vocabulary that is a ‘prediction list’. Also, while preparing for the new words make sure we also take note on the notations of words which means that the given word gives a positive sense to the paragraph or a negative sense to the paragraph that can help you in deciding the right answer.
Last but not the least, Pte-training means training hard on making a real balance between one’s native language and English.
So, Comprehension skills of a candidate comes into action where he can translate the given text correctly into his language, understands the notation of the given paragraph and finally he can direct himself right while choosing an answer by eliminating the wrong options.
Therefore, incorporating these four components into your reading practice for PTE can help you enhance your scores in reading.
